Secretary Marion Crane is on the run after stealing $40,000 from her boss in order to run away with her boyfriend, taking back roads to avoid the police until she stops to rest at the Bates Motel.  There, she meets the owner, polite, but nervous Norman Bates, a young man with an interest in taxidermy and a complicated relationship with his mother.
